How the Instagram Algorithm Works in 2026 (Explained Simply)

By the LikeAdda team · 15 October 2026 · 2 min read

There isn't one Instagram algorithm. There are several, one for each part of the app, and they look for slightly different things.

Feed

Mostly shows posts from accounts you follow. Ranking depends on how often you interact with the account, how recent the post is, and how much engagement it's getting.

What helps: posting consistently, replying to comments, getting your followers to interact.

Reels

Mostly shows content from accounts you don't follow. Instagram tests each reel with a small audience and expands it based on watch time, rewatches, shares and saves.

What helps: a strong first two seconds, short length, trending audio, shareable ideas. A good first hour matters — early views and likes stop a reel from looking dead to its first viewers.

Stories

Ordered by how close you are to the account — DMs, profile visits, story replies.

What helps: stickers (polls, questions, quizzes) that get people to tap.

Explore

Recommends posts similar to what you've engaged with before. Saves and shares are strong signals here.

What helps: carousels and genuinely useful posts people want to keep.

Things that hurt reach

  • Watermarked reposts from other apps.
  • Recently flagged content or policy strikes (check Account Status).
  • Using banned or spammy hashtags.
  • Follow/unfollow tools and engagement pods.

The practical takeaway

Make content people watch to the end and want to send to a friend, post consistently, and give each post a fair start. That's 90% of it.
